Many thanks to everyone who came to the Bike Fest and helped make it a success, we are planning to repeat it all next year. So if you've got any ideas or want to help, please let us know here.
Hay is a great base for cyclists and mountain bikers. Quiet roads radiate out into the Radnorshire hills, the Brecon Beacons and the gentler landscapes of Herefordshire where cyclists can explore the black and white villages, cider mills and apple orchards of the county. Opportunities for natural trail riding are almost limitless, especially for the intrepid MTB rider armed with map and GPS. Wales' flagship long-distance cycle route, the Lon Las Cymru, diverges at nearby Glasbury, with one route heading west to Brecon and the other striking off into the Black Mountains destined for Abergavenny and Chepstow.

And a little local knowledge makes all the difference. Come along and our leaders will show you where the sweetest singletrack is to be found! The area also has some waymarked trails designed by the Brecon Beacons National Park including the Talgarth Black Killer Loop - an all-day outing which is as tiring as the name suggests. For trail centre thrills, Hay is under two hours by car from several well-known centres including Afan Argoed, Cwmcarn, Brechfa and Nant-yr-Arian.
Full details of the festival programme are given for each day. The programme includes:
- daily guided rides led by local riders, both on and off-road,
- a Sportive (a non-competitive, mass start event a little like the cycling equivalent of a marathon!)
- a cross country trail and a cyclo-cross event.
- a "day trip" to Nant-yr-Arian with bike transport included.
- a variety of workshops and try-out sessions including bike maintenance, cycling proficiency and trail skills tuition
The BikeFest hub will be in the grounds of Hay Castle in Oxford Road, where there will be an expo every day with bikes to try out, general cycling information, food stalls and some entertainment ! Please see expo for further details.
